An Introduction to Murshid Samuel Lewis on the inner and Outer Planes

By Pir Moineddin Jablonski

Everyone who has sought and met their teacher knows the abundant grace and deep joy of that opening on the spiritual path. Pir Moineddin was Murshid S.A.M.'s first spiritual successor. In this talk, recorded in Kansas City MO on October 22, 1998, he shares his journey and moments both funny and profound with his teacher. Moineddin was seeking a Zen teacher and Murshid S.A.M. first taught publically in the Zen tradition. The rest, as they say, is history, but offers insight, poignancy and laughter to those of us still journeying. Moineddin follows the story of meeting Murshid S.A.M. with practices and zikr. Ruth St. Denis, modern dance pioneer, is known as the ‘‘grandmother’’ of the Dances of Universal Peace. Mystic, poet and artist, she dedicated her life to embodying the divine through sacred dance. Samuel Lewis said, ‘‘Ruth St. Denis has the faculty of drawing music and dance right out of the cosmos, out of the heart of God. She taught me this faculty.’’

The originator of the Dances of Universal Peace was Murshid Samuel Lewis. A life-long seeker, he studied and mastered many spiritual paths, and was the first American-born Sufi master. Committed to world peace through exchanges in the arts and agriculture, he was a ‘‘citizen diplomat’’ long before the phrase was invented. ‘‘Eat, Dance and Pray Together’’ was his peace plan. In his writings and teaching talks, he especially credits two of his teachers, Hazrat Inayat Khan and Ruth St. Denis, for their influence on him as the Dances began to ‘‘come to and through’’ him.
